Life · Chapter 21 · Individual Provisions

Secondary Addressee (F.S. 627.4555, .4556)

Definition
For an individual life policy in force at least one year covering an insured age 64 or older, the policyowner may designate a secondary addressee (in writing, at application or any time after) who, in addition to the policyowner, receives notice before any lapse or termination for nonpayment of premium — the policy may not lapse unless the insurer mails that notice at least twenty-one (21) days before the grace period expires (F.S. 627.4555). (Exceptions: premiums payable monthly or more frequently and collected by an agent, or paid by credit card/preauthorized debit.)
In plain English
A backup human — often an adult child — who gets the "your policy is about to die" letter too, so an elderly owner's coverage doesn't quietly lapse.
