Life · Chapter 8 · Conversion

Conversion When the GROUP Policy Terminates

Definition
If the master policy itself is terminated (or amended to terminate a whole class), a person insured for at least 5 consecutive years before the termination date — including insured dependents — may convert to an individual policy with no proof of insurability. Florida caps the amount at the lesser of the coverage lost (minus any replacement group coverage obtained within 31 days) or $10,000. Application and first premium are due within 31 days, the same window as an ordinary termination (F.S. 627.567, incorporating F.S. 627.566).
Exam tip
Two conversion triggers, ONE deadline: the employee leaves (31 days, anyone, full amount) vs the plan ends (31 days, needs 5 years, capped at $10,000 in Florida). Course material sometimes says "60 days" for the plan-ends case — Florida does not.
