Deductible Types
Definition
Calendar-year (all-cause): met once per benefit period — the most common; may include a carryover provision (claims from the final 3 months roll into next year's deductible). Flat/initial: stated dollar amount. Per-cause: a fresh deductible for each accident/illness. Common accident: one deductible when multiple family members are hurt in the same accident. Family maximum: caps the family total at 2–3× the individual deductible.
Exam tip
Family deductible can be met by POOLED claims even if no single member hits the individual deductible.
