Authorized/Admitted vs Unauthorized/Nonadmitted
Definition
Classification by permission to transact insurance in Florida. An authorized (admitted) insurer is duly authorized by a subsisting certificate of authority issued by the OIR. An unauthorized (nonadmitted) insurer does not possess a certificate of authority — it has been denied one or never applied — and may not sell or solicit insurance in this state.
In plain English
Authorized/admitted = has the state's permission slip. Unauthorized/nonadmitted = doesn't, and can't lawfully sell here.
Exam tip
Synonym pairs the exam swaps freely: authorized = admitted = approved = licensed; unauthorized = nonadmitted.
