Domestic, Foreign & Alien Insurers
Definition
Classification by domicile — where the insurer was formed or incorporated. Domestic: formed under the laws of Florida. Foreign: formed under the laws of any other U.S. state, district, territory, or commonwealth (a Georgia-chartered insurer operates in Florida as a foreign company). Alien: formed under the laws of a country other than the United States (a Canadian company operates in Florida as an alien insurer).

Home state = domestic. Different state = foreign. Different country = alien. It's about the birthplace, not where it sells.
Exam tip
⚠️ "Foreign" does NOT mean another country — that's alien. Foreign = another state. All three still need a Florida certificate of authority to transact here.
