Group Disability Income Insurance
Definition
Natural-group coverage, benefits defined as a percentage of wages (50–70%) that auto-adjusts with pay (no FIO needed). Group STD: 13/26-week benefit periods, weekly checks, 'own occupation.' Group LTD: 2+ years, often own-occ for 1–2 years then any-occ. Uses a service wait instead of a policy probation, and coordination of benefits reduces payouts by SSDI, pensions, and workers' comp.
Exam tip
When the exam asks whether group DI is occupational or non-occupational — answer non-occupational.
