Health · Chapter 18 · Mandatory Provisions
Reinstatement (Health)
Definition
Mandatory provision letting a lapsed policy be restored. Back-premium payments are limited to premiums due within the previous 60 days. Reinstatement is automatic if the insurer (or authorized agent) accepts the delinquent premium without requiring an application; if an application IS required, the insurer must act within 45 days or the policy reinstates automatically. After reinstatement: accidents covered immediately; sickness only if it occurs 10+ days after the reinstatement date.
In plain English
Pay up and you're back. Accidents count from minute one; illness sits out a 10-day quarantine so you can't reinstate because you already feel sick.
Exam tip
Two numbers get swapped on the exam: 45 days = insurer's silence → automatic reinstatement; 10 days = sickness probation. Accidents have NO waiting period.
