Levels & Settings of LTC
Definition
Three levels: skilled (daily, 24-hr, licensed professionals, physician-ordered) · intermediate (intermittent/occasional skilled care) · custodial (help with personal needs — nonmedical, but still physician-ordered). Settings: nursing homes (skilled), assisted living/RCFEs, home health care (skilled at home) vs home care (personal care), adult day care, continuing-care communities, respite care (temporary caregiver relief). Policies pay for formal (paid) care — never informal family care (though training allowances exist).
Exam tip
Custodial care is the level Medicare NEVER covers — and the one LTC insurance exists for.
