Dental Insurance

Definition
Specialized health expense coverage focused on diagnostic and preventive treatment, paying for routine dental care and care necessitated by accidents. Generally written on a GROUP basis, subject to a deductible and coinsurance — though preventive care often has no deductible. Includes coverage limitations, exclusions, and an annual benefit limit often under $2,000.
In plain English
Mostly employer-group coverage built around checkups and cleanings, with cost-sharing that grows as the work gets bigger.
Exam tip
Group dental generally has NO conversion privilege — but it IS subject to COBRA continuation rules. Common exclusions: cosmetic work (unless accident-caused), services from government agencies, workers' comp treatment, duplicate/lost dentures, oral hygiene instruction, and exotic procedures like splinting or restoring occlusion.
